Is there a person on Earth who doesn’t love Patrick Stewart? If we had our way, he would be in pretty much everything we ever watch. A much as we loved him in Star Trek: The Next Generation as Jean-Luc Picard, the role actually kept him from broadening his horizons while he was a part of the franchise.

Stewart sat down with Pete Hammond of Deadline Hollywood’s "The Actor’s Side with Pete Hammond" to discuss his time in the Star Trek and X-Men franchises. He also went into detail about how it wasn’t all just fun in space.

“I’d already begun to learn that there was a downside to playing an iconic, immediately recognizable actor in a successful television series,” he said. “Which was, you become that person.”

Stewart then told the story of a small role he really wanted to play while he was also aboard Enterprise, but the director didn’t want “Jean-Luc Picard in his movie.” This kind of treatment in Hollywood even made Stewart hesitant to take on the role of Xavier in the X-Men series.

Luckily, Hollywood seems to have gotten over this complex. In recent years, he’s had a range of roles outside of the X-Men franchise, including dancer in the independent film, Match and a gang leader in 2015’s Green Room. He is also set to play Merlin in the upcoming The Kid Who Would Be King
