If there’s one story that all Trek fans know and love, it’s the story of how William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols teamed up to ensure Star Trek would be the first show to air an interracial kiss between a white actor and African-American actor. It’s a cute, humorous tale that does a little lightening up of a dark time in our country when it comes to race relations. While you’ve probably heard the story time and time again, have you ever heard it told by comedian Ashley Nichole Black after a couple drinks?

You’re in luck, then. On tonight’s episode of Drunk History, Black’s going to knock a few back and tell the story while Raven Symone as Nichols and creator Derek Waters plays Shatner. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of Drunk History, now in its fifth season, a comedian drunkenly tells a story about an actual historical event, while other celebrities re-enact the event. We might be getting ahead of ourselves here, but it’s an infinitely more exciting way to learn about events that shaped the nation than your high school history class. It was originally a regular sketch from Funny or Die.

Waters caught up with Trek Movie and talked about his decision to include a Star Trek story this season:

“The genesis of any story is hearing something that sounds familiar, but told in a brand new way. So, hearing what Nichelle Nichols had done and how Martin Luther King inspired her to stay and the importance of her is just a great moment in history, not just Star Trek, that more people need to know about. And on top of that there is the first inter-racial kiss and recruiting astronauts like Mae Jemison. It’s one of those stories like, 'Yeah, but did you know this? and did you know that?' How did I not know all of that?”
